Opera in the Vineyard's major beneficiary has been The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane.

Initially, the Wesley Rotary Lodge which provides accommodation to country cancer patients while receiving treatment at the Wesley, was supported. However more recently, the Leukemia Founcation Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at The Wesley Hospital, has been supported.

A new beneficiary now includes a local project in Stanthorpe, Carramar Home for Senior Citizens.

The Rotary Club of Stanthorpe has 48 enthusiastic members, and since 1953 has supported the community of Stanthorpe in many endeavours. President John Vichie, the members and their partners are proud to support The Wesley Hospital and Carramar by staging the Opera and continuing to place ‘Service Above Self’


Ballandean Estate Wine s is Queensland’s most successful winery and the largest and oldest in the Stanthorpe district. Winner of 3 Queensland State Tourism Awards this 4th generation family business is proud to again host the Opera in the Vineyard.

Fundraising & Support…

The major beneficiary of the Opera in the Vineyard fundraising has been The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane. Initially we supported the Wesley Rotary Lodge which provides accommodation for country cancer patients whilst they received treatment at the Wesley. More recently we have supported the Leukaemia Foundation Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the hospital.
However, a Stanthorpe project is now also receiving major attention. Stanthorpe’s Home for Senior Citizens, or Carramar as it is familiarly known, is now a beneficiary of Opera in the Vineyard. The Rotary Club of Stanthorpe combined some Opera funds, some accumulated funds and a bequest to donate $75,000 to Carramar in 2005. This kick started the community fundraising needed to build a replacement facility in Stanthorpe’s aged community.

However many other health related organisations have benefited from Opera donations. These include; The Royal Flying Doctor Service, The Mater Mothers’ Hospital, The Royal Children’s’ Hospital, Queensland Positive People, Stanthorpe Blue Nursing Service, Me-CFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group, Stanthorpe St John’s Ambulance , RACQ Careflight, St Andrews’s Hospital, the Hear and Say Centre and the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. The Stanthorpe Hospital has also benefited from the Opera, with specialist equipment and furnishings being purchased for the palliative care rooms and maternity ward.


The Wesley Hospital at Auchenflower in Brisbane is the only hospital in Australia to be recognised with an Australian Quality Award. In the practice of medicine and health care generally, The Wesley's leadership role is widely acknowledged as a tertiary referral hospital. Now Australia's most comprehensive private hospital, The Wesley has the capacity for 432 in-patients, 20 day surgery patients, and lodge-style accommodation for 160 people. On any given day, up to 1 000 people can be working or studying here and approximately 600 patients are being treated. Maintaining one of Australia's highest nurse to patient ratios demonstrates the importance The Wesley places on the human component of healthcare

The Wesley Hospital is known as a 'magnet hospital', attracting and retaining highly qualified and caring staff. In the practice of medicine and health care generally, The Wesley's leadership role is widely acknowledged as a tertiary referral hospital. In recognition of The Wesley's commitment to excellence in care, in 1996 it was the first hospital in Australia to be awarded the Australian Quality Award. This prestigious award recognises the international standards of The Wesley's facilities and services and the quality and commitment of its staff.

Community Action
The Opera is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when business and the community work together for a purpose and - also decide to have a lot of fun along the way! Stanthorpe Rotarians are an enthusiastic Club of men and women, who with their partners and family delight in organising and running the Opera each year. The Stanthorpe Shire Council have always been willing to promote the district’s scenic beauty and horticultural products, and have helped the Opera in many ways – from providing a grand piano each year to shifting landfill when the new site was constructed.
